News: Weekend Downtime

I must apologise for the outages of my various Blogs over the weekend.  This was two fold.

Firstly, this was due to upgrades.  Second was resolving the time synchronisation problems that have plagued me for a while.

HowTo: VirtualBox Guest Additions (Command Line) – Time

Due to the nature of how Virtual Machines are operated, maintaining time is quite difficult.  With the Oracle VirtualBox, this is no exception.  Time keeping on some of my VMs has been a serious issue.

I tried to used NTP to resolve the problem, however the clock accuracy is so poor within the VM, that the offsets and jitters are far too large for the clock correction algorithms to correct.  So an alternative solution was needed.

It appears this was a well documented problem.  The resolution was to make sure that I was using a version where this issue had been fixed in the Guest Additions.

Info: Sky+/HD through Elastix/FreePBX

As I’m moving all my telephone apparatus over to VoIP of some sort, even if this means having to replace or use a suitable ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter), it was time to look at the box I most feared – My trusty old Sky+ Box.

I occasionally watch Sky BoxOffice, normally by recording in the middle of the night and playing it back a few days later.  For this to work, the Sky box needs to be connected to a phone line.

This article describes the work I completed in order to make this work with my Elastix PBX.
