HowTo: VirtualBox Guest Additions (Command Line) – Time

Due to the nature of how Virtual Machines are operated, maintaining time is quite difficult.  With the Oracle VirtualBox, this is no exception.  Time keeping on some of my VMs has been a serious issue.

I tried to used NTP to resolve the problem, however the clock accuracy is so poor within the VM, that the offsets and jitters are far too large for the clock correction algorithms to correct.  So an alternative solution was needed.

It appears this was a well documented problem.  The resolution was to make sure that I was using a version where this issue had been fixed in the Guest Additions.

News: A virtual reality....

Well here is proof that my instructions for virtulisation of servers works on with the FREE software VirtualBox, as you are now viewing one of my web sites hosted on a virtual machine inside a bare Ubuntu Linux box.

At around 21:00 GMT, with a little bit of an Apache configuration issue, my primary 4 web sites were transferred into a virtual host and appear to operating quite happily.  The only two issues I have, neither of which are to do with the virtulisation, are the photographic gallery which can no no longer perform rewrites correctly and my weather station is down.

Series: Ubuntu VirtualBox Host I - First Install

While planing my move to Orkney, I need to move my web servers from their current home in southern England to the island, with as little disruption as possible.  Picking it up and transporting it would require a down time of around 3 or 4 days, which I considered unacceptable.

This article investigates the alternatives I considered and results in a host system that houses a selection of Virtual Machines (VMs) to overcome this some and other problems.

Note: This article has been updated due to the name change of VirtualBox from Sun to Oracle.
